Why you should read more
Reading books is decreasing, especially among younger people. TV, video, video games, music is taking over. People don’t think they have time or just don’t appreciate reading as much as TV. This is sad for a number of reasons. Not just sad but also bad, for themselves and for the society. Why is that? Why do you need to read more books?
Reading books will get you many personal advantages. Like how to express yourself, both in writing and orally. By watching TV you won’t get the same deep knowledge of language, of how to develop orally.
What I am trying to say here is that the best way I’ve found to develop my skills in another language is to read. I learn most from books. Second is Internet. Internet is a fantastic place. But it also contains a lot of misspelling and language shortcuts. Sure, many books do that too, but over all there are more thoughts behind books which leads me to the next subject, work.
There are usually more work and thoughts behind books. You can’t write a post like I do know and publish it in a book without someone reading it first and checking it for misspellings and contributions to the subject. My experience is that you simply get more content in books. The trust factor is simply higher.
In books you don’t get irritating ads or links all over the place either. Books are often neutral and friendly to look at and read. Websites can be pink with red text with irritating flash ads. You get the picture. To really learn something or develop what you already know you need to be focused. It is much easier to focus while reading books than it is reading on the Internet.
You can bring books anywhere. Sure, many people have laptops today but many can’t bring their computers anywhere. With books that’s no problem. And even if you have a laptop you have to have electricity and Internet, if you haven’t downloaded what you want to read. And books are much smaller.
It is also relaxing to read books. No distractions. And again, better focusing than Internet. I love Internet, it’s not that, with information everywhere and links relating to what you read and so on. But I certainly believe in being focused on what you read to fully understand it. And I also believe this is harder to do on a website with links and ads disturbing you. TV has some great documentaries sometimes but you can’t decide what you want to see right now. You have to wait for when the documentary you want to see is shown. The availability isn’t the same. And ads a probably disturbing you here too. Books are better for this. When you feel like reading on a subject you just get the book and are able to focus solely on its contents without anything else disturbing your eyes.
Books are cheap. Yeah, it’s certainly cheap education. Sure there are expensive books but I bet most of them has more interesting information than most websites or TV-programs.
You know what you get. Well, not all the time maybe, but more than a website or TV-program at least. You know what subject the book is about and you know it’s written correctly according to language rules and has some decent content.
That’s all I could think about right now.
What’s your thoughts about this?
